WHERE DOES THE SWASTIKA IN BALI COME FROM?

The swastika is a symbol that evokes a number of associations around the world, but in Bali it has a deeply sacred and positive meaning.

The history of the swastika goes back thousands of years and originates from ancient India. The word ‘svastika’ comes from the Sanskrit words ‘su’ (good) and ‘asti’ (to be), meaning ‘well-being’. This symbol spread throughout Asia with the development of Hinduism and Buddhism, where it represents prosperity, harmony and the cyclical nature of life.

In Bali, where Hinduism is deeply woven into everyday life, the swastika symbolizes positive energy and balance. It is a frequent motif in temples and shrines, embodying the power of the sun and the god Surya. Unlike the tilted version, which is associated with negative connotations, the Balinese swastika appears in its original form, i.e. clockwise, symbolizing prosperity and peace.
