Tenganan Village

Tenganan Pegringsingan is a village in the regency of Karangasem in East Bali, Indonesia, known by anthropologists before the 1970s to be a secluded society in the archipelago.

People

The people of Tenganan Pegringsingan are called Bali Aga—the original Balinese, descending from the pre-Majapahit kingdom of Bedahulu. There are strict rules as to who is allowed to live in the village. Only those born in the village can stay in the village and become full members of the community.

Art

Tenganan is known for its unique culture that still holds to the original traditions, ceremonies and rules of ancient Balinese, the village layout and architecture as well as genuine art and craft, which includes paintings on lontar (palm leaves), statues, and gringsing or double ikat textiles woven in only 3 places in the world.
